JoJo Worthington – The Divide
Released: April 7, 2022

I am releasing a new single and music video called The Divide. I wrote this song while I was in isolation during COVID 19. Like most people, I like having control. I think during this time, we all felt helpless in terms of what we thought our lives should look like. Additionally, I felt the conflict between family, friends and the world very deeply. Sometimes personally. It’s hard to accept that there is nothing you can do or say to change someone’s mind, to make someone listen to you when you are on opposite ends. You know in movies when there’s an earthquake and the earth splits open and it separates the protagonist and the love interest and then sometimes you see people fall in the gap? It’s kinda about the people in the gap and trying to find a home there.

Member Release: Steve Goldberger

Steve Goldberger – All Roads Lead to You
Released: April 1, 2022

This new release from Niagara-on-the-Lake musician and recording artist Steve Goldberger marks his eleventh full-length album. Like several of his others, this is an entire record of cover songs, but ones upon which he has put his own spin, which is one of his trademarks. Unlike the others, this one was done during the pandemic, so the musical contributions by other artists had to be done in isolation, but gave Steve a chance to try out his newly revamped studio, “The Shed.”

The songs themselves have been carefully chosen, with some well-known hits mixed with a lot of lesser-known gems.

Member Release: Michael Darcy & The Atlantic Tramps

Michael Darcy & The Atlantic Tramps – Sweet St. John’s
Released: March 11, 2022

I’ve just released a music video for our latest single ‘Sweet St. John’s’ which is a love song to the beautiful town and people of St. John’s, NL. I wrote it after a brief trip there back in the summer of 2018, when I was lucky enough to have played a few gigs in the area. The song came to me as soon as I got back to my apartment in Toronto. It is the 2nd single release from our upcoming studio album ‘Down to the Roots’ which should be out in May of this year. The music video features some gorgeous drone footage of the town.

Award-winning duo Gathering Sparks (Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis) returns to live, in-person performances with upcoming concerts in Toronto, Ottawa, Perth, Waterloo, Brampton, Port Carling, and Waterloo!

GATHERING SPARKS is the graceful collision of Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis—musical friends who blend tight harmonies, finely crafted songs, and a love of participatory singing to create an intimate and uplifting experience. Their inclusive approach embraces folk, pop, blues and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar, piano, accordion, and ukulele.

With their infectious mix of styles and compelling vocal blend, Gathering Sparks has been making some big waves. Their debut 6-song CD was nominated for a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, and they quickly became an audience favourite. Whether they are belting it out a capella style, tugging on your heartstrings with a folky original, crooning a jazzy swing tune, or getting into the spirit with a gospel-inflected singalong, Gathering Sparks performances make fans out of listeners with their stellar harmonies and fine musicianship.

Their newest album “All That’s Real” (Borealis Records, September 2019) hit the top ten of the Folk Alliance International Folk DJ chart for October and November 2019. The lead-off song, “Bringing in the Light,” was recognized with a 2019 Folk Music Ontario “Songs From the Heart” Award, singer-songwriter category, and was the #1 song on the Folk DJ chart for the month of December 2019. The album also made several radio hosts’ “best of” lists for 2019.

Member Release: The Pairs

The Pairs – Monsters
Released: Mar.18, 2022

“Reminiscent of a child-like fear of the dark, Monsters reminds adults of what is lurking in the shadows and beckons us to stop ignoring what is scary or unfamiliar.” –The Pairs

Monsters weaves a tale of both literal and metaphorical shadows. This song is about the untold stories that shape us but stay hidden until their inevitable journey to the surface. As adults we have a desire to look away from what we can’t quite make sense of. This song beckons us to stop ignoring and welcome the shadows.

Member Show: Cassidy Taylor & Jess Knights

Haliburton County Folk Society Presents: Cassidy Taylor & Jess Knights
Saturday March 19, 7:30 pm

The Haliburton County Folk Society is thrilled to reintroduce live music to the Haliburton Highlands in 2022 by featuring 2 local artists. Cassidy Taylor and Jess Knights.

Cassidy Taylor, born and raised in Haliburton offers a sensual voice that has always been able to silence a room. Her energy resembles a warm, sweet, and quirky introversion derived from her upbringing in the Haliburton Highlands. Cassidy finds a way to incorporate an element of storytelling into everything she does. Releasing her latest single, “Pretty,” was essential in finding her niche sound in the pop music scene. Cassidy adds an ‘underground’ flare to the genre while looking to artists such as Lorde, Taylor Swift, and Bleachers for inspiration.

Jess Knights, a professional musician from Calgary, has recently taken up residence after spending many of her summers at a family cottage on Lake Kashagawigamog. Straddling the renegade worlds of alt-country, blues and soul, singer-songwriter Jess Knights’ hard-to-pin-down style is reflective of her own unassuming past. Her 2020 album, Best Kind of Light, brings into focus the power of Knights’ luminous voice and her burgeoning skills as a songwriter of earnest balladry.

This double bill underlines the Folk Society’s commitment to support and celebrate local musicians of all genres. The Haliburton County Folk Society as the co-winner of Folk Music Ontario’s 2020 “Setting The Stage Award”

Member Release: King Cardiac

King Cardiac – Midnight Cigarette
Released: March 4, 2022

King Cardiac has handed the paint brush to the machine for their upcoming music video to “Midnight Cigarette,” animated entirely using artificial intelligence.

The video travels through abstract, kaleidoscopic landscapes that morph in time with the song’s brooding groove. Though the striking images are born out of a computer matrix they have an emotional quality that is surprisingly human.

Band leader Gabriel DeSantis says these psychedelic visuals are the perfect match to the song’s dream-like imagery:

“I wrote Midnight Cigarette during a period of intense jet-lag, that purgatory where the line between reality and illusion is blurred. When I saw these AI generated artworks for the first time I recognized that same ‘in-between’ place.”

“Midnight Cigarette” will be released on March 4th, 2022. It is the third single off King Cardiac’s debut record, Bloodlines, due out in May 2022.

The record was recorded at The Rooster Studio in Toronto with engineer, Don Kerr (Bahamas, Ron Sexsmith) at the helm. Bloodlines was produced by DeSantis and Kerr and mastered by Grammy nominee and Juno and Polaris Prize winner, Philip Shaw Bova (Feist, Lido Piementa, Andy Shauf).

King Cardiac is Gabriel DeSantis, Paul Metcalfe, Sam Petite, Tom Richards, Lowell Whitty and Alan Zemaitis.
